WHY ARTS?

WHY AN ARTS ENRICHED EXPERIENCE?

At Artful Steps Early Learning, we believe the arts are not an “extra.”  They are an essential way young children learn about themselves and the world around them.

Author Fran Smith explains that involvement in the arts is associated with growth in language, math, cognitive development, critical thinking, and verbal skills, as well as increased motivation, focus, confidence, and teamwork. Through creative experiences, children learn how to think, not just what to think.

In a world that often emphasizes the end product, we intentionally focus on the process. The arts naturally invite curiosity, experimentation, problem-solving, and persistence. Children learn that trying, failing, adjusting, and trying again is not only okay - it’s how learning happens. The final result is meaningful and rewarding because of the journey that led there.

By engaging in art, music, yoga, dance, and theatre, children build foundational skills for academic success while developing creativity, resilience, and a lifelong love of learning.

CLASSROOM GOALS FOR YOUR CHILD

Social & Emotional Development

We provide positive, nurturing experiences that support your child’s sense of self and foster healthy relationships. Children practice empathy, cooperation, and emotional expression while building confidence and independence.

Cognitive Development

Our goal is to inspire creative thinking and problem-solving through hands-on exploration. Children are encouraged to observe, question, experiment, and discover - learning that mistakes are opportunities to grow.

Language Development

Daily activities support both receptive and expressive language. Through conversation, storytelling, dramatic play, and group discussion, children learn to understand language and use it effectively to communicate ideas and feelings.

Physical Development

From classroom movement to time spent in our studio spaces, children develop coordination, balance, and body awareness. They learn to move with intention, respect personal space, and strengthen both large and small motor skills.

Logical, Mathematical & Spatial Development

Our learning stations promote visual recognition, patterning, shape awareness, and early number sense. Children explore measuring, sorting, categorizing, and problem-solving to help build a strong foundation for future academic learning.

Listening & Speaking

We create intentional opportunities for children to listen, respond, and engage in meaningful conversations with peers and adults, both about their own experiences and the world beyond them.

Music, Dance & Theatre Development

In our studio environment, children explore rhythm, tempo, memory, storytelling, and expressive movement. They learn to move through space, follow patterns, collaborate with others, and develop a positive, respectful relationship with their bodies.

Intrapersonal & Interpersonal Development

Children set personal and group goals, reflect individually, and work cooperatively as part of a classroom community. These experiences encourage self-awareness, empathy, and teamwork.

Community Routines & Responsibility

Our classroom operates on predictable routines and includes student-assigned jobs. These responsibilities foster ownership, pride, and accountability while helping children practice leadership and collaboration within their community.

At Artful Steps Early Learning, the arts provide the pathway for children to grow socially, emotionally, physically, and academically, preparing them not only for kindergarten but for life.
